Saturday 7th - Tuesday 10th November 2020
An unusual winter short break as we cruise the waterways between the great medieval cities of Ghent and Bruges, with time set aside to explore and sightsee.
There’s no better way to visit the pretty villages, vineyards and historic sites of rural Belgium than aboard an intimate day boat.
Environmental sensitivity is a high priority for Backwaters. Their hybrid-engine boats can cruise for six hours on electric propulsion, and the hull is shaped to minimise wash.
You’ll cruise aboard a newly commissioned day boat that has been designed specifically for a morning or full day of cruising, including a light lunch. On morning cruises you will board the coach to further explore the local sights, before heading back to your hotel. The boat has been designed to accommodate up to 40 passengers in observation lounge comfort and there is additional seating outside for those wanting to take in the views and fresh air. The boat has two WC/Washrooms, a galley serving hot and cold drinks, and there is a free bar serving beers and wines.
Please note; this is a no smoking vessel.

Day 1: From your local joining point we make our way South for our channel crossing to France. We
continue our journey to our hotel, the Ibis Bruge Centrum for 3 nights on a bed & breakfast basis. On arrival the rest of the day/evening is yours at leisure. Known as the little Venice of the North, it is easy to see why Bruges has its reputation as a city of Romance. There are quaint cobbled streets, an array of restaurants and cafes, and shops selling their famous Belgian chocolate on almost every corner.
Day 2: We begin our adventure with a free morning in Ghent using the boat as a base for anyone who might prefer a water-borne coffee morning. There will be lunch on board with unlimited beer & wine. Our cruise starts in the heart of historic Ghent before we join the arterial Kanaal Ghent-Oostende north of the city. We end our day in Lovendegem.
Day 3: The next morning we return to Lovendegem and we now stay on the same waterway heading into Bruges, cruising past the small towns of Aalter and Beernem. Arriving in Bruges we follow the canal around the east side of the city, passing its historic windmills, before we conclude near the major junction with the Boudewijnkanaal which links Bruges with Zeebrugge. The remainder of the day/evening will be at leisure in Bruges.
Day 4: We will have a morning at leisure in Bruges before continuing our journey to Norfolk where you will be dropped back at your chosen joining point.
