There’s no better way to visit the pretty villages, vineyards and historic sites of rural France than aboard an intimate day boat.
Environmental sensitivity is a high priority for Backwaters. Their hybrid-engine boats can cruise for six hours on electric propulsion, and the hull is shaped to minimise wash.
You’ll cruise aboard a newly commissioned day boat that has been designed specifically for a morning or full day of cruising, including a light lunch. On morning cruises you will board the coach to further explore the local sights, before heading back to your hotel. The boat has been designed to accommodate up to 40 passengers in observation lounge comfort and there is additional seating outside for those wanting to take in the views and fresh air. The boat has two WC/Washrooms, a galley serving hot and cold drinks, and there is a free bar serving beers and wines.
Please note; this is a no smoking vessel.

Day 1: Following your home taxi collection we make our way South for our channel crossing to France. We continue our journey to our base for the week, the Campanile Reims Centre Cathedral for 4 nights on a bed & breakfast basis.
Day 2: On our first day of cruising we leave Reims through pleasant parkland before emerging into the countryside, with good opportunity to stroll the towpath between some of the locks. We pass through the villages of Sillery and Beaumont-sur-Vesle, reaching the 11km summit pound by early afternoon. After the village of Sept-Saulx the waterways corridor becomes forested with good opportunity to see some of the wildlife before the day concludes with a half-hour passage through Mont-de-Billy tunnel. We moor for the day just beyond the tunnel near the small village of Vaudemanges. The remainder of the day/evening is yours at leisure in Reims.
Day 3: We return to Vaudemanges where we pass through a series of 8 locks spread over 6km as the canal descends to join the Marne’s lateral canal at Condé-sur-Marne. Good opportunity for a towpath stroll here as the locks are quite regular. From Condé our course turns westward as we follow the lateral canal through to the village of Ay-sur-Marne, on the opposite side of the Marne to Epernay, where our voyage concludes. The lateral canal takes us through the villages of Tours-sur-Marne and Mareuil-sur-Marne, with a lift-bridge to encounter at Bisseuil. We complete our day with a visit to the Vollereaux Champagne House just outside Epernay for a tasting of three of their finest Champagnes!
Day 4: After our two days of delightful cruising we allow ourselves a free day to explore in Reims, which has no less than four historic buildings included on the UNESCO World Heritage List: the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Royal and Episcopal Palace of Tau, the Saint-Remi Basilica, and its archaeological and Fine Arts Museum.
Day 5: We have another morning at leisure to explore Reims. After lunch we commence our journey to Norfolk where our door to door taxi service will be waiting to take you home.
