Also included is admission to the UNESCO World Heritage Site - Jeronimos Monastery. This highly ornate monastery is situated in the Belem district of western Lisbon and was historically associated with the early explorers, as it was from here that Vasco da Gama spent his last night before his voyage to the Far East. You will find cloisters with intricate sculptural details, vaulted ceilings, unique maritime motifs, and beautiful courtyards and gardens. A lunch is included today
Day 5: Today we enjoy a guided excursion to the pretty riverfront city of Coimbra. Rising scenically from the Rio Mondego, Coimbra is an animated city steeped in history. It was Portugal’s medieval capital for more than a century and it's home to the country’s oldest and most prestigious university. Its steeply stacked historic centre dates to Moorish times and is wonderfully atmospheric, with its dark cobbled lanes and monumental cathedral. Whilst here we include entry into the University of Coimbra. This Unesco-listed university, is one of the world's oldest, and was originally founded in Lisbon in 1290. It was subsequently relocated several times before being permanently established in Coimbra in 1537. Its showpiece centre is the Pátio das Escolas, a vast courtyard surrounded by majestic 16th- to 18th-century buildings. These include the Paço das Escolas, Torre da Universidade, Prisão Acadêmica, Capela de São Miguel and Biblioteca Joanina. The Botanical Gardens which was originally established in 1772 by the Marques de Pombal, cover over 13 hectares, with decorative fountains, a medicinal plants nursery, and also a tropical greenhouse. The 16th century reconstructed Aqueduct can be seen next to the Botanical Garden and is known as the ‘Arches of the Garden’. A lunch is included today.
Day 6: Today is a day of leisure to enjoy the town of Praia da Viera.
Day 7: This morning we are once again met by our guide and make our way to Porto. One of the oldest in Europe, Porto’s old town in the city center has been an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. It is therefore no surprise that Porto is a city with a rich history and culture. Stretching along the sinewy curves of the Douro River, Porto is a city of hilly cobblestone lanes, avant-garde museums and grand architectural monuments that date back to the Middle Ages. It’s also a fine city for culinary adventures amid northern Portugal’s finest restaurants and wine bars.
Whilst we are here we have an included visit to the Cathedral and a River cruise on the Duoro. And of course no visit to Porto would be complete without a Port wine tasting.
Lunch is included today.
