Day 1: Following your home taxi pick up, we join our luxury tour coach and head North, crossing the Border into Scotland and on to our hotel for the next 4 nights on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
Day 2: This morning we are joined by a local guide for a full day tour of ‘secret Solway’ in Cumbria. The Solway coast is a stunning place to visit with miles of open coastline, spectacular rocky cliffs, rolling grassy dunes and sandy beaches. With dramatic views across the water to Scotland, we will take in the fortified medieval sites and the local history of attractive coastal towns and villages and savour the views of the Lakeland Fells.
Day 3: After breakfast, we make our way to the Devil's Porridge Museum. The unique name of the museum is inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who while visiting the factory as a war correspondent witnessed the munitions girls mixing the nitrocotton by hand and commented ‘that is the devil’s porridge’! Commemorating HM Factory Gretna, the largest munitions factory in the world during the First World War, the museum also brings the Solway Military Coast to life during the Second World War and beyond. This afternoon we meet our guide for a tour taking in the Scottish side of the Solway estuary. There will be a visit to Annan harbour, once a busy shipbuilding site and a historic stepping off point for Scottish people emigrating to the USA and Canada in the 1800s. Also included are sites which influenced the famous Scottish poet, Rabbie Burns.
Day 4: This morning we enjoy a glorious drive to Lowther Castle and Gardens, 'a jewel in the English Lake District's crown. The castle was built in 1806 as the seat of the Lowther family, and now sits as a lasting memory in its ruins. With visiting dignitaries including kings, queens, writers and poets, the exhibition in the old stable block tells the story of the family and its 850 year history in vivid detail. This afternoon we take the short journey to Glenridding for a relaxing two hour cruise on Lake Ullswater to Pooley Bridge. This lovely lake is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery to its south and softening gentle hills of the north, and is the perfect place to end our day.
Day 5: Sadly this morning we make our way back to Norfolk, making suitable stops en route. Upon arrival our door to door service will be waiting to take you home.
