Join us as we head to Durham for our this heritage and history Tour.  Stay right in the centre of this quintessential Northeast city full of history and charm, shop, dine and explore the cobbled streets of the city that boasts several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Durham Cathedral, castle and the university are all just a short walk from the hotel.  Step back in time as we visit Beamish Museum, set within 300 acres of beautiful Durham countryside.  Visit the historic Market town of Barnard Castle and the Bowes Museum, the French Chateau housing beautiful European art.

Day 1: Following your home taxi collection, we make our way to the Marriott Royal County Hotel in Durham for our four-night stay.

Day 2: After a leisurely breakfast we make our way to the Beamish Museum Open Air Museum. Here you can live the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s, 1940s. & 1950s. Board one of the trams, horse-drawn carts or trains and visit the 1900s traditional sweet shop, explore the 1940s wartime farm, disappear down into the 1900s mine at the pit village or go ‘behind the scenes’ and see some of the fascinating items in the collections of Beamish.

Day 3: Day at leisure to explore. Durham is crowned by its magnificent Norman Castle and Romanesque Cathedral and features a glorious mix of old and new. Its ‘olde worlde’ cobbled streets, mix with real ale taverns and cosy tea rooms, sitting alongside modern shops, museums and visitor attractions.

Day 4: We travel over the North Pennines, passing the Derwent Reservoir and through the villages of Edmundbyers & Blanchland to High Force, one of the most impressive waterfalls in England (entrance not included), time will be given for those who wish to walk and view the falls. We continue our day to visit Barnard Castle, a historic market town which takes its name from the castle around which it grew. Known as ‘Barny’ to the locals, we have time to explore the town and obtain lunch. You can see where Dickens immortalised ‘Dothboys Hall’, take a look at Cromwell’s refuge, browse round the antique shops or visit the castle itself (entry not included), high above the Tees. We then visit the Bowes Museum, just outside the town. This is one of County Durham’s biggest surprises. Housed in a majestic French-style chateau, the Museum opened in 1892 and will amaze you with its superb collection including the amazing and beautiful Silver Swan.
