Day 3: This morning we pass through Tipperary as we head to Cashel to see the Rock of Cashel, widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most spectacular sights. Set on a dramatic outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale, The Rock of Cashel, iconic in its historic significance, possesses the most impressive cluster of medieval buildings in Ireland. Among the monuments to be found there is a round tower, a high cross, a Romanesque chapel, a Gothic cathedral, an abbey, the Hall of the Vicars Choral and a fifteenth-century Tower House.
Originally the seat of the kings of Munster, according to legend St. Patrick himself came here to convert King Aenghus to Christianity. Brian Boru was crowned High King at Cashel in 978 and made it his capital. In 1101 the site was granted to the church and Cashel swiftly rose to prominence as one of the most significant centres of ecclesiastical power in the country. The surviving buildings are remarkable. Cormac’s Chapel, for example, contains the only surviving Romanesque frescoes in Ireland. The Rock of Cashel is one of Ireland’s most spectacular visitor attractions.
Afterwards we continue to the pretty town of Cahir for free time. A scenic town, overlooking the banks of the River Suir, this charming town has plenty to offer, including its own castle.
Day 4: Today we take a tour of County Limerick, beginning with a visit to Foynes Flying Boat Museum. Here you can travel back to the 1930s and ’40s, when Foynes played a pivotal role in establishing commercial transatlantic passenger flights. Learn about the diverse range of people who arrived and departed from Foynes through the comprehensive collection of historical and interactive exhibits and memorabilia. We also visit the new maritime museum with the option of sampling a traditional Irish Coffee – which was invented at Foynes.
This afternoon we board the Spirit of Killaloe at the hotel's private jetty for a scenic cruise on Lough Derg, part of the river Shannon watercourse.
Day 5: Today we head to County Clare and Bunratty. Here, we visit what is considered to be the most complete and authentic castle in Ireland – Bunratty Castle. The 15th century castle offers a glimpse of what life was like in medieval times, as visitors wander through its chambers, hear stories of battles and bravery, and marvel at the finest collection of medieval furniture in the country. Aside from the main castle building, the grounds surrounding Bunratty also feature gardens and parklands, and the Bunratty Folk Park which contains a church, farmhouses, a pub, shops, and a lovely garden.
