Discover the rich heritage and timeless landscapes of Northumberland on this fascinating escorted holiday, based at the luxurious four-star Slaley Hall Hotel & Spa. From Roman frontiers and medieval castles to living history and railway heritage, this tour offers a wonderful blend of culture, history and relaxation.

Journey along the iconic Hadrian’s Wall, explore the remarkable remains of Vindolanda, and step back in time at Beamish – The Living Museum of the North. Visit historic Raby Castle, discover the birthplace of the modern railway at Locomotion in Shildon, and enjoy scenic drives through some of northern England’s most beautiful countryside.

With comfortable luxury coach travel, expert guiding, carefully selected excursions and four nights of excellent dining and accommodation, this holiday promises an unforgettable exploration of England’s northern heritage — all enjoyed at a relaxed and unhurried pace.

Day 1: Following your home collection, we board our luxury tour coach and set off on our journey north to the beautiful county of Northumberland. Sit back, relax and enjoy the passing scenery as we travel in comfort through rolling countryside.

On arrival, we continue to the impressive four-star Slaley Hall Hotel & Spa, our home for the next four nights on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. After check-in, there will be time to settle into your room or take a leisurely stroll around the hotel and its stunning surroundings before enjoying your evening meal.

Day 2: Today we are joined by an experienced local guide for a fascinating journey into the history of Hadrian’s Wall, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that once formed the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. As we travel alongside the Wall, our guide will share captivating stories of Roman soldiers, frontier settlements and daily life on the very edge of the empire.

We then continue to Vindolanda, one of Britain’s most significant archaeological sites. Here you will have time to explore the excavated fort and village, discover an impressive collection of artefacts — including the renowned Vindolanda writing tablets — and gain a vivid insight into Roman life. Time is also allowed to visit the excellent museum and café before we return to Slaley Hall later this afternoon, with time to relax before dinner.

Day 3: After a leisurely breakfast, we board our luxury tour coach and travel to Beamish – The Living Museum of the North. This world-renowned open-air museum vividly brings history to life, with its recreated streets, shops, trams and knowledgeable costumed guides.

Enjoy exploring at your own pace as you stroll through the 1900s Town, visit the Pit Village, step into the 1950s Town, or take a ride on one of the beautifully restored heritage trams or buses. There will be plenty of time to enjoy lunch in one of the museum’s cafés or traditional eateries.

Later this afternoon, we return to Slaley Hall, where you can relax, make the most of the hotel’s facilities, or unwind in the spa before another delicious evening meal.

Day 4: This morning we travel by luxury tour coach to Locomotion in Shildon, part of the National Railway Museum. Here you can discover a fascinating collection of historic locomotives and railway engineering, highlighting the region’s crucial role in the development of the modern railway. Enjoy free time to explore the galleries and exhibits at your own pace.

This afternoon, we continue to the impressive Raby Castle & Gardens, one of England’s finest medieval fortresses. You will have the opportunity to explore the beautifully preserved state rooms, admire the magnificent art and interiors, and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the elegant walled gardens and surrounding parkland. With its rich history and striking architecture, the castle provides a memorable highlight to the day.

We then return to Slaley Hall for our final evening meal together.

Day 5:  After a final breakfast at Slaley Hall, we bid farewell to Northumberland and check out of the hotel. We then rejoin our luxury tour coach and begin our journey back to Norfolk, with suitable comfort stops along the way. On arrival, you will be returned to your home using our convenient home taxi service.
