Day 1: Joining the coach from one of our convenient local pick-up points, we travel to North Devon and the Durrant House Hotel in Bideford for our four-night stay on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. Please note that porterage is not always available at this hotel.
Day 2: Today we journey along the edge of Exmoor to Lynmouth, known as ‘Little Switzerland’, where we have time to explore. Surrounded by magnificent scenery, the high ground of Exmoor plunges steeply into the sea, creating a breathtaking backdrop. The East and West Lyn Rivers tumble through deep wooded valleys before meeting at Lynmouth and flowing out to the open sea. There is also a beautiful small harbour for you to discover.
We then continue to the Victorian seaside resort of Ilfracombe, often described as the jewel of the North Devon coast. Nestling around a beautiful historic harbour and enclosed by dramatic slate cliffs, Ilfracombe’s unspoilt charm and independent shops make it a favourite with visitors.
Day 3: Today we travel down the Atlantic coast to Boscastle, a picturesque natural harbour village, largely owned by the National Trust. Quaint stone cottages, shops and tea rooms surround the Elizabethan quay.
Our next stop is Tintagel, inextricably linked with the legend of King Arthur. You may wish to visit the castle, visitor centre or King Arthur’s Hall (entry not included). We then enjoy a scenic drive back to Bideford.
Day 4: After breakfast, we enjoy a half-day excursion to Appledore, a historic fishing village with winding streets, colourful houses and lovely estuary views. The village is home to the North Devon Maritime Museum (entry not included). The museum, housed in a Grade 2 listed Georgian building, has a wide range of exhibits detailing Appledore’s history, as well as the wider maritime history of North Devon, which includes Viking raids, WWII beach landings and ship building throughout the years. You can quite easily spend a few hours wandering through the network of historic streets, taking in the traditional fishing cottages museums and independent shops, before indulging in some fine local produce at one of the many cafes, pubs and restaurants.
After lunch we head back to Bideford for an afternoon at leisure. Explore the historic Pannier Market, browse antique shops hidden in narrow alleyways known locally as “drangs”, or watch the activity along the bustling quay. Optional boat trips to Lundy Island are available (not included).
Day 5: We depart for our return journey to Norfolk, making suitable stops en route. On arrival, you will be dropped off at your chosen local joining point.
