Our journey begins with free time in the historic city of Peterborough. Explore the city centre at your own pace—browse the shops, relax in a café, or take the opportunity to visit the magnificent Peterborough Cathedral, one of the finest Norman cathedrals in England.

In the afternoon we travel a short distance into the Cambridgeshire countryside to visit the remarkable Elton Hall for a guided tour of the house and self guided stroll around the gardens.

This extraordinary and romantic part-Gothic house has been home to the Proby family since 1660 and remains one of England’s most fascinating private historic houses. Over the centuries it has evolved into a wonderful blend of architectural styles, reflecting the tastes and interests of successive generations.

Inside, every room reveals remarkable treasures. Visitors can admire magnificent furniture and an impressive collection of fine paintings, ranging from early 15th-century Old Masters to outstanding 19th-century works by celebrated artists such as Lawrence Alma‑Tadema and John Everett Millais. The house also features a superb collection of porcelain and books, including the library—one of the largest in private ownership—which holds rare volumes such as the prayer book of Henry VIII.

The beautifully restored gardens are equally enchanting. Carefully revitalised over the past forty years, they now flourish with mature hedging, elegant topiary, colourful herbaceous borders, a tranquil sunken lily pond, and a delightful orangery garden. Their beauty was recognised with the prestigious Historic Houses Judges’ Choice Garden of the Year award in 2021.
